The only drink I consume is plain, boiled water, and an occasional cup of coffee or tea.Would drinking energy drinks such as Red Bull or Gatorade improve my performance? I am afraid of these unnatural drinks since I suspect they are full of chemicals and sugars.

You're not missing anything at all. In fact you are doing your body a favor by not drinking all that junk, it's just as bad as pop. Read on.
I have lost fat and have gained better health by following this and the other program I mention in My Profile.
You will get everything you need by eating the following, listed in order of importance:
Raw leafy green veggies (romaine, red and green leaf lettuces, kale spinach, etc)
Solid green veggies - raw, steamed or frozen (asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, peas, peppers, etc)
Non-green, non-starchy (beets, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, etc)
Beans/legumes - cooked, canned or sprouted ( chickpeas, pinto beans, black beans, etc)
Fresh fruits (apples, bananas, oranges, watermelon, etc)
Starchy veggies (white potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, corn, carrots, etc)
Whole grains (barley, millet, oats, brown rice, quinoa, etc)
Raw nuts and seeds (almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc)
Do not skip breakfast. Oatmeal with fresh fruit. No sugar or milk. Rice or almond milk is better. Smoothies can be good too, depending on what you put in it.
You don't have to eat eggs, fish or meat for protein. You can still eat them, but a huge salad with some chicken would be better.
Don't count calories or carbs. Diets and pills don't work. Supplements take over and weaken your system.
Drink filtered water. City water may have added chemicals. Can you really trust bottled water?
Pop is one of the worst things you can put in your body. Stay away from sugar, junk food and over processed foods.
Great exercises: walking, biking, swimming.

What do you think? Answer below!
You can certainly do without energy drinks but there's nothing wrong with the occasional bottle of Gatorade (Your body naturally perspires more then just water (such as sodium) so it's probably good to supplement your fluid intake with something other then water.
ReplyDeleteYes. Pissing your money down the drain.
ReplyDeleteYou're not missing anything. Water is perfect. I prefer spring water. I'm not sure what you're doing boiling water. I have noticed that for long endurance workouts (1 hour + on stair climber or 2+ hours biking) a powerbar or gatorade will put back some necessary nutrients for me to continue longer. Oranges and bananas will do similar, but i usually don't carry them on me.
Red Bull is speed. Avoid.
Hsiaoshuang the quick answer to your question is NO. Anytime you can avoid high fructose corn syrup (hfcs) its a good thing for your body. You should be aware though that hfcs is in nearly everything processed. Even things you wouldn't think would have hfcs in them such as ketchup. Having said that their is something to be said for a post-workout drink. Post workout your body is ready and able to handle, and actually benefits from, a drink a little higher in sugar than just plain water. Its called nutrient timing and Dr John Berardi RD the author of precision nutrition has spoken about this frequently. Some good resources have been listed but you may also want to consider drmirkin.com, a free newsletter, and a couple of books by Dr Oz, a regular on Oprah, "You the Owners Manual" and "You on a Diet". Lots of recipes and researched based advice.
ReplyDeleteGet all your energy needs met by eating real food, exercise, drink what you are drinking now and get the proper amount of sleep. Go to an article in my blog where I talk about the effects of these "energy" drinks and what is really in them you may not be aware of.
