Does one really need to remove that thing inside the Garlic clove?

Question by zigzagidiot: Does one really need to remove that thing inside the Garlic clove?
When cooking or using garlic, does one really NEED to remove that little green phft! thing which runs through the middle of the clove? I have never separated and tasted it - is it bitter?

  2. it iss bitter but that clove is getting older then if you get fresh ones it shouldnt have that but you dont really need to remove it because the other garlic will over power it

  3. No way, leave it, it's really got a more potent garlic flavor. Best wishes

  4. No, it just indicates that the garlic is getting a bit old and is trying to sprout. It's part of the garlic plant and there's nothing wrong with it.

  5. No not at all its just the sprout part of the garlic. If you planted it thats where it would start (actually it already has) to grow.

  6. it's ok don't be afraid, it's part of the garlic. No different in taste than the rest of the clove.

  8. no need to remove anything. the entire garlic is healthy for you, and adds so much flavor to every meal. just peel and chop away. enjoy!

  10. The little green shoot means that it's trying to sprout and isn't fresh anymore.
It's still useable and it won't hurt you.
It will, however, make the garlic more bitter...so if you're going for a subtle garlic flavor, best get fresher garlic.
    Personal preference time.

  11. When the clove starts to sprout the clove is usually old and will be bitter.

I would just get some fresh garlic.

Another thing you can try is to go to the produce section of your supermarket and buy peeled garlic cloves. They taste the same and you can always tell how fress they are.

  13. I use about 3 to 4 bulbs of garlic a week and I have never seen one with a little thing in it - try buying better quality garlic.

  14. Months ago I read a newspaper article on garlic by, I think, Jean-Christophe Novelli. He said that the evil little green shoot is the really stinky part that makes the breath smell, and that he always removes it! I have looked all over and can't find the article. Anyway, through my frantic searches, I did come across some interesting garlic "secrets":

As a garlic lover, I'll use any part of fresh or smoked garlic, then chew parsley or a coffee bean! I did find this on the little green phft thing...
