People, including me, use anything from an air popper (!) to a cast iron pan. Look them up on YouTube and you'll find more info than you want! They couldn't give me a properly roasted Vienna Roast and there's no way of hearing the difference between the 1st and 2nd crack.
A local well know coffee vendor near me wants to sell me a roaster for $ 400. I think that's a little steep for my four or so cups a week habit.
There are also 1000s of green beans available from 100s of vendors and how can you choose the flavour components profile between Peruvian Eastern Mountain Westside or Eastside compared to Uganda Treeps or Tropes?
I gave up, reclaimed my cast iron pan and purchase Starbucks Vienna Roast because it's always perfect!
Good luck with that!

The Hearthware iRoast series are considered the best roasters for the price. The iRoast2 is new and provides superior memory storage of custom roasting curves. If you don't need them, the original iRoast is a good bet if you can find one. They might be close to or a bit above $ 150, but I haven't heard of any recommended ones below the iRoast price point.

We use a hot air popcorn popper we got at Goodwill. Do it outside 'cause it stinks! Here is a good article on it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about roasting them but to grind them, check-out antique coffee-grinder reproductions at Mt. Kineo Woodcrafters. They grind coffee to the perfect blend for a really good cup of Joe
