If you have the whole beans for a light roasted coffee, can you roast the beans darker to get a stronger french roast type coffee? Can you do this under a typical oven broiler, or is there another way?

add more beans will help make it darker.

Ive watched a TV show on this where they roast the coffee beans themselves in some other country, I cant remember where it was, but they just roasted them in a pan over a fire. They kept turning them so they wouldnt burn. So Im sure you can do them on a stove in a pan. Not sure how long it takes but you could try it for a few minutes and see how it tastes and if it needs more do the next batch longer.
ReplyDeleteMy sister used to roast the Green Coffee Beans in the toaster oven at 400°F until they were dark.
ReplyDeleteyou could try to re-roast them
also using a french press / bodum will help get the flavour you're looking for.
There are inexpensive ones around $ 15 if you're on a budget

You could attempt to roast them again, but they will not come out the way you want them. If you want a specific roast profile you must start with Green Coffee Beans and roast up to your desired color. If you roast and already roasted bean it will get burnt and you will be left with bad tasting coffee.
ReplyDeleteIf are going to attempt it anyway, you can roast in a pan on the stove, but you must constantly stir the beans. Green coffee (or unroasted coffee) must be roasted between 420-475 degrees, but I'm not sure if that matters for pre-roasted beans. Conversely you can purchase a home roaster & some green beans and learn how to roast on your own.
Once coffee is roasted it needs to sit for 24 hours to de-gas. After that its shelf life is 2 weeks in whole bean. Coffee will begin to go stale within two minutes of being ground.
