Question by Hannah: Should a 14 year old be taking weigt loss supplements?
My daughter is 5'1 and 166 pounds. She is a select softball player and pretty active. She really wants to lose weight so she got interested in Pure Green Coffee Bean Extract. Its all natural and very promising and doesn't seem to have any doubts or complications. Would it hurt a 14 year old? Or no? I don't think it would hurt her. What's your take on it?

At 14, I don't think she should be taking anything that compromises her metabolic rate as it may confuse her body. She is going through a necessary stage of puberty and the fat that is storing in her body is needed for her growth. Also, you have to consider the mentality a 14 year old girl will grow in to as she becomes a woman if she starts taking supplements at this stage, she will probably find the need to explore harsher supplements as she grows older and she will grow in to obsessing over her physical appearance. I don't think anyone should start exploring dietary supplements until they are at least 18 years old or older and the extra fat is no longer needed for proper developement. No matter how organic or herbal a supplement may be, it is still in some way or another boosting her natural metabolic rate. I just think 14 is too young to be exploring weight loss. Consult your physician if need be.

Alot of weight loss supplements can take a toll on adrenals.. which could be bad or a young athlete. I'd focus more on food..but if you read up on this and it seems to be fine.. then why not! Brown Algae is also said to be a good fat burning supplement (found at Vit Shoppe and similar places).
ReplyDeleteMake sure she is getting plenty of protein.. balanced with carbs and fats. Coconut oil can be great for weight loss and also athletes love it for energy because it is medium chain. You can also cook her food in that.
Just make sure she gets enough food for her active life.. don't cut back on protein.. if you have to.. cut back a little and put in more carbs (not so many starches though). Athletes needs carbs to restore oxidative damage caused by athletic stress.
Hope this helps
Honestly I don't like it. The best way to lose weight is diet and exercise. If you use a diet supplement it's like a crutch. You rely on it every time you gain a little extra weight, it's not healthy. You have to do it on your own steam, ya know? But if it her weight is seriously affecting her, medically, then i would consider it an option, but if she's fine medically I wouldn't do it. You have to lose weight on your own steam or you're always going to be falling back on a crutch.
ReplyDeleteOh and just so you know a healthy weight for someone 5'1 is around 105 to 110 pounds, so y'all have a goal to aim for.
Wish y'all the best of luck!!
